Bio / Artist Statement
American artist Ramon “Ray” Bofill born to Cuban American parents, was raised in Miami, FL. His family history and his experiences working in the New York fashion industry, prompted Bofill to begin experimenting with textiles and fabrics in 2004. His use of repurposed fabrics and traditional painting media result in hybrid surfaces that are a mixture of painting, tapestry and sculpture. In the process of intuitively and playfully re-contextualizing fine art and craft materials, Bofill explores issues of identity and cultural heritage, as well as broader themes of manual labor, art, aesthetics and social class.
“My aim is to invoke a sense of visual intelligence, a system of rendered energy and thought, by means of materials, process and design. The viewer of my work should feel what is visceral and decipher what is diagrammatic.” -Ray Bofill
Past exhibitions of his work include a solo show at Nobile & Amundsen, Norfolk, VA; The All-Media Juried Biennial at Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL; The Cintas Fellowship Finalists Exhibition at MDC Museum of Art and Design, Miami, FL; and a Summer Invitational at David Castillo Gallery, Miami, FL. Bofill has also participated in numerous residencies, completing a two-year residency at Art Center/South Florida in Miami. He attended a seven-month residency fellowship whereby one out of ten are awarded, at the renowned Fine Arts Work Center in Cape Cod. Other awards include a summer residency at West Dean College in the UK, a six-week residency at Vermont Studio Center.
